Best thing to do in Split Croatia: Diocletian’s Palace
About Diocletian’s Palace
Diocletian’s Palace, also known as Palazzo di Diocleziano in Croatian, is an ancient palace and UNESCO world heritage. Located in the heart of Split, this is one of the best-preserved ancient Roman buildings still remaining. Whilst it is referred to as a palace, this structure contained not only Diocletian’s residence but was also the location of the military garrison. Much of this complex in Split Croatia is free to enter, but there are some sites in the palace that charge an entry fee. The complex was built by the Roman emperor Diocletian between 295 CE and 305 CE. In the same year that the palace was completed, Diocletian abdicated from his position and retired in his palace. He was actually the first Roman emperor to ever leave office voluntarily. The site has been declared a Cultural Good of Croatia.
The structure itself is rectangular in shape. Each of the 4 walls of the fortress has a gate at its centre. These are named the Golden Gate, Silver Gate, Iron Gate and Bronze Gate. The southern section of Diocletian’s Palace were the emperor’s apartments and this overlooked the sea. The Diocletian Palace Substructures are remarkably well-preserved and were used to elevate the Emperor’s chambers as well as for storage. Much of the marbled used to construct the palace came from the island of Brač, and there was also marble imported from Italy and Greece as well as granite columns and sphyinxes from Egypt.

While you can walk from one end of the palace to the other in 5 minutes, we recommend devoting at least a couple of hours to exploring the palace, wandering through its streets and marvelling at its architecture. About Marjan Forest Park
Marjan Forest Park, known as Park Šuma Marjan in Croatian, is a massive park a short walk from Split Old Town. It is the lungs of the city, with a dense pine forest and plenty of green space. This is a popular weekend retreat in the heart of the city and is a favourite destination for walkers, runners and cyclists as well as families looking for a fun day out. Marjan park has numerous walking tracks, beaches, tennis courts as well as Split Zoo. Additionally there are chapels, churches, a Jewish cemetery and even a hermitage. There is also a lookout point at the top of Marjan Hill, and from this elevated point 178 metres high you get some of the best views of Split Croatia for free! Conveniently there is also a free Marjan Forest Park e-bus to take you around this park in Split Croatia. Finally, if you feel like something to eat or drink there are a number of bars and restaurants within the grounds of the park.
Why visit Marjan Forest Park
Marjan Forest Park is a peaceful oasis and the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is a very family-friendly space and there are lots of different areas to enjoy picnics, exercise and leisure activities. The park also has a number of beaches and it is a very scenic spot to enjoy nature. In addition, its elevated position on Split’s peninsula gives it unparalleled views of the area. Landmarks in Marjan park include Split Zoo, Kasjuni Beach, Vrh Telegrin observation deck as well as a number of churches. Furthermore this park is very easy to get to, being within walking distance of the city centre. If you don’t feel like walking there is also a free bus that goes from the visitor’s centre and stops at a few different locations within the park. This was our favourite free thing to do in Split Croatia due to the wide variety of activities available as well as the stunning scenery here.

Split Riva, also known as The Riva or Split Promenada, is a beautiful free waterfront boardwalk in the heart of Split Croatia. It stretches 250 metres and runs in front of Diocletian’s Palace overlooking Riva Harbour. This 55 metre wide boardwalk is nicely paved, is lined with palm trees and has plenty of benches to sit on along the way. There are also plenty of popular outdoor bars and restaurants overlooking the promenade. The Riva Split is always filled with people and has a great atmosphere. It has stunning waterfront views and is a great place to people watch. Additionally, events, performances as well as local markets are often held along here.

About Kasjuni Beach
Kasjuni Beach, also known as Kupalište Kašjuni or Plaża Kašjuni, is a peaceful beach on the Marjun peninsula. This free beach in Split Croatia is a pebble beach with shallow turquoise water and shade from nearby trees. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards and there are showers, public toilets, change rooms as well as a beach bar on-site. This beach also has an unoffical FKK section for nudists in the far right corner. Kasjuni Beach is accessible via public transport and there’s also parking available. Alternatively you can walk here from the city centre through Marjun Park.

Kasjuni Beach is a relaxing beach where you can enjoy the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. There are lots of trees around which provide plenty of shade. About Grgur Ninski Statue
Grgur Ninski (Gregory of Nin) was a Croatian Catholic Bishop from the 10th century. He introduced the Croatian language in places of Latin for religious services in Croatia, thereby not only strengthening the Croatian language, but also Christianity in Croatia.
Grgur Ninski Statue, also known as the Statue of Gregory of Nin or Spomenik Grguru Ninskomu in Croatian, is a one of the most iconic statues in Split Croatia. It was created by prominent Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and erected in the Peristyle of Diocletian’s Palace in 1929. It was subsequently moved to its current location near Split’s Golden Gate in 1954. This bronze statue stands 8.5 metres (28 feet) high. A notable feature of the statue is its left big toe, which has been polished to a shine due to the superstition that touching it brings good luck.

Split’s Green Market, also known as Gradska tržnica (Pazar) in Croatian, is a vibrant outdoor farmer’s market. About Fruit Square Split Croatia
Fruit Square (Voćni Trg), officially named Radic Brothers’ Square or Trg Braće Radić in Croatian, is a free destination that is one of the most beautiful squares in Split, if not this whole region of Croatia. The square is surrounded by delightful Baroque architecture, making it very visually appealing and great for holiday photos. Its moniker, Fruit Square, came about due to the fruit and vegetable market that used to be here. While the market has outgrown this space and moved to Green Square, the name of this square remains.
Prominent features of Fruit Square the Venetian Tower, Milesi Palace and a statue of Croatian poet Marko Marulic. The Venetian Tower is an octagonal building that was constructed in 1435. Milesi Palace was once home to the wealthy Milesi family and is an excellent example of Dalmatian Baroque architecture. The statue of Croatian poet Marko Marulic was created by famed Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

Located just outside the Iron Gate of Diocletian’s Palace, the square is surrounded by buildings in a range of architectural styles including Romanesque, Renaissance, Venetian, Gothic and Art Nouveau. Notable structures around Split People’s Square include the Old Town Hall, Church of Our Lady of the Bell Tower, a number of palaces, a flagpole and the Old Town Clock. Trg Republike, also known as the Prokurative or Republic Square in English, is a popular gathering spot in Split. This large Venetian-style square is often host to concerts and events. There are also a number of restaurants and shops around the square. Split Republic Square is surrounded on three sides by neo-Renaissance buildings and the 4th side of the square looks out to sea. This square was built in the second half of the 19th century.

About Port of Split
The Port of Split is the largest passenger port in Croatia and also one of the largest passenger ports in the Meditteranean. Located on the Adriatic Sea, it is a popular destination for cruise ships. There also ferry services connecting Split to the Croatian Islands. The port is right on the doorstep of Split Old Town and provides easy access to many of the main attractions in the city. It is also well connected by bus and train.

If you are visiting Split by cruise ship you will enter the city at the Port of Split. This is a pretty port area which is right in the heart of the city. It’s also the launch point for ferries to popular Croatian Islands such as Hvar and Korčula and there are also ferries from Split to Dubrovnik.
How long to spend at Port of Split
If you are departing from the Port of Split, we recommend arriving at least half an hour before departure. Where in doubt, check your ticket or ask at the ticket office.

About Kaštelet Beach
Kaštelet Beach is a pretty pebble beach on Marjun Peninsula. This free beach is about half an hour walk from the city centre in Split Croatia. It is a long but narrow beach with clear turquoise water that is shallow near the water’s edge. Be aware that there’s not much shade and also no umbrella rentals available. There are change rooms, toilets and showers on-site as well as parking nearby. The beach is sometimes referred to as Obojena Beach, after a beach bar that used to be here.

Kaštelet Beach is a relaxed beach at the base of Marjun Park. It’s a scenic area that is perfect for sunbathing and swimming. It’s shallow water makes it perfect for families as well as people that prefer gentler water.

About Strossmayer Park
Strossmayer Park, also known as Park Josipa Jurja Strossmayera or Gradski perivoj (Đardin) in Croatian, is the main city park in Split. Located just outside the Golden Gate of Diocletian’s Palace and close to the Statue of Gregory of Nin, it is a pretty garden area with a fountain, a children’s playground as well as benches to sit on. There are sometimes also events and performances in the park.

Strossmayer Park is a pretty free outdoor space near the old town of Split Croatia. It’s a nice open area with plenty of shade and places to sit. It’s a nice place to relax and watch the world go by. There’s also sometimes performances or events here, which are nice to see.
How long to spend at Strossmayer Park
You can walk through Strossmayer Park in less than 5 minutes. However this is a nice place to spend half an hour relaxing and enjoying the tranquillity of the area. Allow extra time if there’s an event or a performance in the park.

Street Let Me Pass, or Ulica Pusti me proć’ in Croatian, is a narrow street in Split Old Town. This free attraction in Split Croatia is considered one of the narrowest streets in the world. Located just beside Jupiter’s Temple, the street is surrounded by stone buildings and makes an interesting stop when wandering through the streets of Diocletian’s Palace.

About Venetian Tower Split Croatia
Split Venetian Tower is a pentagonal tower that overlooks Fruit Square in Split. It is the main structure that remains of the Venetian Castle, which is known as Mletački Kaštel in Croatian. The tower was built in 1441 and is located just south of Diocletian’s Palace. It was originally part of the defensive walls of the city.
