About Castle Hill

For unrivalled views of Nice, head up to Castle Hill (or Colline du Château in French). Reaching 92 metres (302 feet) above ground, this park dominates the Nice skyline. For those feeling energetic, there are steep stairs which take you up the hill from Promenade des Anglais. Alternatively there’s also an elevator available. The hill lies between the port area of Nice and the old town.

The hill was inhabited by humans as far back as the 4^th century BCE with a Greek settlement called Nikaia. However the castle that the hill is named after was built around the 11^th century CE. Unfortunately the castle is no longer there as it was destroyed in 1706 by order of Louis XIV.

Today, Castle Hill Park is popular with families as well as with tourists. It is a must see in Nice France due to its sweeping panoramic views from its free observation deck. Apart from the views there are a number of notable landmarks and features of the park including a 19^th century artificial waterfall (Cascade Dijon), Bellanda Tower, the ruins of the cathedral, two historic cemeteries as well as playground areas and a cafe. The park also host events, the most notable of which is a free 2 day dance party called La Fête du Château. A daily event that can be heard from Castle Hill is the Nice Midday Cannon, which dates back to 1861. About Promenade des Anglais

The Promenade des Anglais (which translates to Walkway of the English) is the most famous waterfront walkway in Nice. It is known by locals as simply the Promenade or La Prom. This 7km (4mile) stretch is lined with palm trees and provides uninterrupted views of the beautiful blue water of the Mediterranean Sea. The wide promenade also includes a separate cycle path and there are a number of bike share docks here if you feel like hiring a bike for an hour or two.

Built in the 18^th century, the idea for the promenade came from English aristocrats who would spend their winters in Nice. Initial funding for the promenade was supplied by English barrister and churchman Lewis Way. The promenade is a lively area which is always filled with people. Events are also held along the promenade, including part of Nice Carnival.

A dark day in the history of Promenade des Anglais was July 14, 2016. This was the day of the 2016 Nice truck attack in which 86 victims lost their lives.

Orthodox church in Nice France: Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice

About Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice France

St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral, or Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice, is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in the heart of Nice France. Construction of the church was paid for by Russia’s Tsar Nicholas II and the church opened in 1912. Russia has long had an association with Nice, being a popular holiday spot for the Russian imperial family and Russian nobility since the 19^th century. The eldest son of Emperor Alexander II died in Nice from meningitis in 1865. Chapelle du tsarévitch Nicolas Alexandrovitch was built on the site of his death, right next door to what is now the cathedral. Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice is also dedicated to Tsarévitch Nicolas’ memory. The cathedral and the land it stands on is officially the property of Russia. This has been the case since 2011 after a long-running legal battle.

The church is a Byzantine-style church with 5 bulb roof structures. It was designed by Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky. This free thing to visit is listed as a national monument of France.

Place Massena (or Massena Square in English) is the main square of Nice France. It was named after French commander André Masséna. Built in the 19^th century, the square is easily identified by its chequerboard pattern as well as the ochre red Neo-classical buildings that surround the square. Nice was not always part of France, and was part of the principality of Savoy, a territory of Italy until 1860. This association with Italy influenced the architecture of the square.

Nice Cathedral or Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate de Nice is a Baroque style Catholic cathedral in Nice France. The church is dedicated to Saint Réparate, who was a 3^rd century Catholic virgin and martyr from Palestine. The original cathedral on this site was built in 1049. Not long after that, in 1060, relics belonging to Saint Réparate arrived in Nice. A chapel in honour of the saint was built in 1075. Over the years the buildings extensions to the buildings occurred and between 1650 and 1865 the current main building of the cathedral was built. Next a bell tower was added between 1731 and 1757. Further additions occurred in the 19^th and 20^th centuries.

The cathedral has the designation Basilica under the Roman Catholic church. It is listed as a national monument.

Historic monastery in Nice France: Monastère de Cimiez

About Monastère de Cimiez

Monastère de Cimiez (or the Monastery of Cimiez in English) is a Franciscan monastery that dates back to the 9^th century. The first building on this site, Notre-Dame de Cimiez chapel, was built by Benedictine monks of the Saint-Pons abbey. However in 1543, the convent of some Franciscan monks was destroyed in the Siege of Nice and they needed a new building. In 1546 the Franciscan monks bought this chapel from the Benedictine monks.

The monastery is set on the hill of Cimiez in Nice. The complex includes the 15^th century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption as well as the Franciscan Museum. The church contains some important artworks by Nice painter Louis Bréa. The monastery also has gardens as well as a cemetery. The gardens are an attraction in their own right and we discuss them more in the next section. There are a number of notable people buried in the cemetery including French painter Henri Matisse. The monastery is listed as a historical monument.

About Jardin du Monastère de Cimiez

Jardin du Monastère de Cimiez (or Garden of the Cimiez Monastery in English) is a beautifully manicured garden in Nice. As the name suggests, it’s attached to a Franciscan Monastery. Created in 1546, this is Nice’s oldest garden and also the oldest garden in the whole of the Côte d’Azur. Taking inspiration from Italian gardens, the 10,000m² space is filled with fruit orchards, vegetable and herb gardens as well as ornamental plants. The layout has remained fairly constant over the years and is arranged in a chequerboard style. Other features of the garden include rose-covered pergolas, fountains and ponds as well as magnificent panoramic views. There are free tours of the gardens and the gardens are wheelchair accessible.

Main shopping street in Nice France: Avenue Jean Médecin

About Avenue Jean Médecin Nice France

Known locally as “The Avenue”, Avenue Jean Médecin is the main shopping street in the centre of Nice. The street is also a main arterial road and has a tram line running down it. Since it was first constructed in 1864 it has had a number of name changes. It has held its current name since 1966, which is in honour of a former mayor of Nice. The street runs from north to south from Place Masséna to the Marseille–Ventimiglia railway.

Along the street are many retail stores, including both international and domestic brands as well as a couple of department stores and a shopping mall. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants. At night the street lights up with an art installation called L’amorce du bleu (Beginning of Blue) by French conceptual artist Yann Kersalé.

There are a number of notable buildings and landmarks along the street. The most famous of which is the Basilica of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption which is a grand church that was built in 1864. Sadly this was the site of the 2020 Nice stabbing – a terrorist attack which caused the deaths of 3 people.

The park was first developed in 1852. It now contains beautiful lawns, well maintained walkways, plenty of seating and facilities such as public toilets. About Fort du Mont Alban Nice France

Fort du Mont Alban is 16^th century fort set on a hill near Nice. The Duke of Savoy oversaw construction of the fort, which occurred between 1557 and 1560. Despite coming under attack during World War 2, the fort is remarkably well preserved. The fort and its surrounds are listed as a Historical Monument. It is not possible to enter the fort building itself. However most people come to the grounds of this fort mainly for the exceptional panorama views. The hill on which the fort rests stands at 222 metres and is one of the best lookouts in the French Riviera. From here, you have sweeping views over the Côte d’Azur, from the Italian Riviera to the Estérel Massif mountain range. It is even possible to see Corsica from here on a clear day.

To get to the fort you can walk, drive or catch a bus.
