Historic abbey in Marseille France: Abbaye Saint-Victor

About Abbaye Saint-Victor Marseille France

Abbaye Saint-Victor (or The Abbey of St Victor in English) is a 5th century abbey that was founded by a Christian monk called John Cassian. The crypt of the abbey formerly held the remains of Cassian along with Saints Maurice, Marcellinus and Peter.

The abbey has had many challenges over its long history, including invasions by both the Vikings and the Saracens. During the 9th and 10th centuries the Saracens destroyed the abbey on two separate occasions. It was subsequently rebuilt in the 11th century. In the 14th century the abbey’s church was enlarged and walls were built around the abbey.

However in the 16th century it suffered further losses. Firstly an unscrupulous abbot dispersed the extensive library. Later the Pope put the abbey under the control of a reformist congregation and finally secularised it in response to the poor behaviour of the monks. During the 18th century the abbey was stripped of its treasures, relics were burned and gold and silver was melted down to make coins. The building then became a warehouse, a prison and a barracks. It was again used as a church during the First French Empire and was restored in the 19th century.
