Carnival Piazza San Marco Venice Italy
Carnival Piazza San Marco Venice Italy

A trip to Venice wouldn’t be complete without visiting Piazza San Marco (or St Mark’s Square in English). This is the main square in Venice and is often referred to simply as la Piazza (the Square). Napoleon is thought to have called it the finest drawing room in Europe. The square dates back to the 9th century and was enlarged over time. In the 12th century it was paved in brick and subsequently the bricks were replaced by stone in the 18th century. There are a number of major landmarks around the square including St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Torre dell’Orologio. There are also many shops, restaurants and cafes around the square.

St Mark’s Square is the lowest point in Venice, which means it is particularly susceptible to flooding. During the Acqua Alta, or high waters, the square can become a lagoon. These events usually happen in winter, and if the Acqua Alta is particularly bad an alarm will sound throughout the city. Elevated walkways called passarelle are put up to get around flooded parts of the city during Acqua Alta.

There are a few rules to abide by in Piazza San Marco which are enforced by fines. This includes no eating or drinking while sitting on the ground, steps or monuments as well as no littering, feeding pigeons and riding bikes through the square.

The name Libreria Acqua Alta translates to High Water Bookshop, in recognition of the high water flooding that Venice regularly experiences. About Ponte dei Sospiri

Ponte dei Sospiri (or Bridge of Sighs in English) is one of the most famous landmarks in Venice. It was built to connect the interrogation rooms of Doge’s Palace to the New Prison. Lord Byron gave the bridge its poetic name with reference to the sighs that the prisoners might utter in seeing the beautiful city of Venice for the last time.

The Bridge of Sighs has been referenced numerous times in popular culture and has also provided inspiration for other bridges around the world. In the movie “A Little Romance”, the characters make reference to a superstition that if two lovers kiss in a gondola under the Bridge of Sighs at sunset while the bells of the Campanile toll, they will love each other forever. Just like the characters in the movie, many loved up tourists head to this bridge for their own little romance.
