Piazza della Erbe is the main square in Verona. The name translates to “Square of Herbs”, but it is also known as Market Square. Surrounding the square are beautiful historic buildings and monuments including Palazzo Maffei, Torre dei Lamberti, Casa dei Mercanti and St Mark’s Lion. Within the square, features include the Fountain of Madonna Verona as well as the stone capitello La Berlina.

About Piazzale Castel San Pietro
Piazzale Castel San Pietro (or Castle San Pietro Square in English) is a beautiful lookout point on Colle San Pietro (San Pietro Hill). From the top of the hill there are sweeping views of Verona and the surrounding area. This square is next to a Romanesque fortress, however entry to this fortress is currently only for private functions. There is also a restaurant on the hilltop, which is a great place to have a meal or a drink while enjoying the views. To get up the hill there is a steep walking path with a few gardens along the way. Alternatively you can pay to take a funicular to the top of the hill.
During Roman times the hill was known as Monte Gallo or Rooster Mountain and was a religious site with a temple and a theatre. Later there was a Medieval church on this hill which was dedicated to St Peter. The hill was named after that church. A castle called Castello Visconteo was built here between the 14th or 15th centuries. However in 1801 the Napoleonic army destroyed most of the buildings on this site. The fort that is here today was built between 1852 and 1856 and designed by Austrian engineer Conrad Petrasch.

Piazza Brà (often referred to as simply Bra) is the largest public square in Verona and one of the largest in all of Italy. It is located next to the ancient Roman ampitheatre, Verona Arena. Other buildings near the piazza include Palazzo Gran Guardia as well as Verona’s town hall, Palazzo Barbieri. The square contains Fontana Delle Alpi (Fountain of the Alps) as well as a statue of Italy’s first King Victor Emmanuel II. It is also filled with shady trees and nice places to sit. Scenic bridge in Verona Italy: Ponte Scaligero
About Ponte Scaligero Italy
Ponte Scaligero (also known as Ponte di Castel Vecchio or Castelvecchio Bridge) is a medieval bridge which crosses over the Adige River in Verona Italy. It was built by the ruling lord Cangrande II della Scala in the 14th century to serve as an escape route in case of an uprising. His castle, Castelvecchio, is on one side of the river near this bridge.
Despite many centuries and numerous floods, the bridge survived intact until 1802 when French troops destroyed the tower on the left bank. During World War 2 the Germans destroyed the bridge completely during their retreat in 1945. Fortunate for us, Italian architect Libero Cecchini managed to reconstruct the bridge in 1951 in a form that was true to the original.

About Ponte Pietra Verona Italy
Ponte Pietra (or Stone Bridge in English) is the oldest bridge in Verona. It was originally built as a wooden bridge in 148 BCE and subsequently replace by a stone bridge. Over the years the bridge has faced many challenges, being damaged by flooding of the Adige River numerous times. Additionally, the bridge was blown up by retreating German forces in 1945 during World War II. On that instance only one arch remained. The bridge was subsequently rebuilt using original material in 1959.
The bridge is 120metres (394 feet) in length. It contains 5 arches and is made out of travertine and brick. This Roman bridge is pedestrian only.

About Santuario Madonna di Lourdes Verona Italy
Set on the hilltop overlooking Verona, Santuario Madonna di Lourdes (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes or Sanctuary of the Madonna di Lourdes in English) has spectacular panoramic views of the area. The sanctuary was originally built in 1908 in the centre of Verona, however it was destroyed during World War 2. Only the statue of the Immaculate Conception remained undamaged. In 1958 the sanctuary was moved to its current location, which was previously Fort San Leonardo. The fort was remodelled and transformed from a place of war to a place of peace.
There is a steep path to walk to the sanctuary from the town area of Verona. It’s a challenging walk, but worth it for the views. This lookout point is less crowded than other areas in Verona and has a tranquil atmosphere. Public toilets and a car park are available on site. Conservative dress is required to enter the church – specifically, knees and shoulders must be covered.

About Arche Scaligere Verona Italy
Arche Scaligere (Scaliger Tombs or Della Scala Tombs in English) are five ornate Gothic tombs belonging to Lords of the Scaligere family (also known as the Della Scala family or the Scaligeri family). The Scaligere family were a powerful family that ruled Verona in the 13th and 14th centuries. The most important Lord in the family was Cangrande della Scala (meaning “big dog”). His tomb is adorned with dogs and the sarcophagus has an effigy of Cangrande I.
The tombs are surrounded by a wrought iron fence decorated with a stair motif. This is due to the family’s name meaning “of the stairs” in Italian.

About the courtyard of Casa di Giuletta Verona Italy
Casa di Giuletta (or Juliet’s house in English) is a 13th century house that belonged to the Dal Capello (also known as Cappelletti) family. As their name was similar to Capulet (as in Juliet Capulet from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet), this house became known as Juliet’s house. The play Romeo and Juliet is a work of fiction, however it was inspired by a poem which was in turn inspired by older stories from Italian writers. While Juliet may never have existed, it’s hard not to buy into the fantasy for just a little while. Even though “Juliet’s balcony” was only added in the 20th century.
The courtyard area is free to enter and there’s only a fee if you want to go inside the house. It’s a pretty area and befitting of the romantic story it’s attached to. From the courtyard you can see the famous balcony and imagine Romeo looking up at Juliet. In the courtyard is also a statue of Juliet. There is a superstition that if you touch the right breast of the statue it’s good luck. Over the years many hands have tried their luck and the statue is noticeably a different colour at that spot.
We recommend getting there early to avoid the crowds. It is a popular spot and the place was packed when we were there.

It’s hard not to get caught up in the fantasy while you’re here, so we highly recommend seeing Juliet’s house and that famous balcony for yourself. About I Portoni della Brà
I Portoni della Brà (Doors of the Bra or The Archway at the Piazza Brà) is Medieval gateway to the city which once acted as a doorway between the city and the surrounding suburban countryside. It has two arches made of Verona marble. At the top of the gate is a clock that was installed in 1872. Tucked into the side of the gate is a statue of William Shakespeare.
The first mention of a gate at this site was in a document from 1257. In 1483 Venetian traveller Marin Sanuto wrote about the area and included a drawing which depicted a single arched gate at this site. The next depiction of the gate was in a fresco by local painter Nicola Giolfino and showed the gate with a double archway. As Giolfino lived from 1476-1555, it can be deduced that the gate was expanded to have a double arch sometime in the late 15th or early 16th century.

Ancient main gate to Verona Italy: Porta Borsari
About Porta Borsari
Porta Borsari (or Borsari Gate in English) was the main gateway to the city of Verona and dates back to the 1st century CE. The name of the gate is due to customs officials (bursarii) being stationed here in the Middle Ages in order to collect taxes on goods. The original name for the gate was Porta Iovia, after the nearby temple dedicated to Jupiter lustralis. During the Middle Ages, prior to its current name it was called Porta di San Zeno.
An inscription in the wall notes that the gate was reconstructed in 265 CE. The gate is made out of limestone and has two archways at road level. Above the archways are two levels with 12 arched windows. Originally the gate was built as a small fortress – there were also guard towers and the gate enclosed a small courtyard. However today only the side of the gate that faces away from the city still remains.

One of the first public buildings in Italy: Palazzo della Ragione
About Palazzo della Ragione
Palazzo della Ragione (or Palace of the Reason in English) is a 12th century building which was one of the first public buildings in Italy. Known at the time as Palazzo del Comune, it was originally used to house the city’s magistrates. Over the years it used for a variety of different purposes. It currently houses an art gallery. Additionally, the courtyard is often used for events. Conveniently, there are also public bathrooms in the building (there is a 50 cent fee to use those facilities).
The complex includes the 84 metres tall tower Torre dei Lamberti as well as a number of halls and a courtyard. Originally there were 4 corner towers around the palazzo, but now only those facing Piazza del Erbe remain. The facade of the building has alternating rows of brick and tuffstone, which gives it an eye catching striped pattern. Arches also feature prominently in this Veronese Romanesque design. The building has experienced a number of fires over the years, the most serious being in 1218, 1541 and 1723. As a result of the fires as well as the changing demands of the building, numerous renovations and restorations have occurred over the years.

About Casa di Romeo Verona Italy
Casa di Romeo was thought to be the home of the Montecchi family until the 14th century. This family is believed to be Romeo’s family, who were immortalised in the story of Romeo & Juliet. The home is now privately owned, so visitors can only view it from the outside. It is a castle-like building with high crenellated walls. This 13th century building is one of the best preserved medieval houses in Verona. On the outside of the house there is a plaque as well as a lot of graffiti left by tourists.

About Arco dei Gavi
Arco dei Gavi (or Arch of the Gavi in English) is Roman arch that was built in the 1st century CE. It was built by the local Gavi family and designed by Roman architect Lucius Vitruvius Cerdo. The niches on the sides of the arch may have held statues of Gavi family members.
The arch was originally built as a stand-alone structure, but over time it went through a series of changes. It was a city gate during Medieval times and part of the city walls. In 1805 it was dismantled by French Military Engineers and its stones lay in Citadella Square. In 1932 it was reconstructed using its original stones next to Castelvecchio, a short distance from its original location.
