Beach near abandoned hotels in Croatia: Kupari Beach

About Kupari Beach

Kupari Beach, or Plaža Kupari, is a scenic beach set to the backdrop of the ruins of abandoned hotels. The area was a beachfront resort in the 1960s that was popular with families of military personnel. The hotel complex included seven hotels overlooking the water. However in the 1990s it sustained significant damage during Croatia’s War of Independence. Subsequently from 1998 to 2001 the Croatian Army used some of the buildings as an army base. When the army left, the buildings were pillaged and stripped of furniture, copper pipes and anything of value. Since then nature has taken over and the hotels have become an alternative tourist destination for urban explorers.

Why visit Kupari Beach

Kupari Beach is a beautiful beach on the Adriatic Sea. It contrasts with its backdrop of derelict buildings that are a reminder of Croatia’s war-torn past. The hotels surrounding the beach are an eerie place to look around. With plans to renovate these buildings in future, we recommend seeing them while they last.
