UNESCO World Heritage Site in Hvar Croatia: Stari Grad Plain

About Stari Grad Plain

Visiting Stari Grad Plain is like taking a step back in time. This agricultural area is a testament to the dedication of generations of farmers who have maintained the systems of land division and water management that were first established on this site 2400 years ago. Stari Grad Plain was settled by Ionian Greeks from Paros in the 4th century. They developed this fertile land into rectangular parcels of land delineated by dry stone wall boundaries. These tracts of land were called chora, and grapes and olives were grown on this land. Stone huts called trims were built to house tools and shelter farmers from the elements. Additionally gutters and cisterns were built to collect rainwater, which is essential in this dry climate.
