Since the fall of communism in 1991, the pyramid has taken on a variety of uses including as a conference and events centre, a temporary NATO base, a nightclub and a broadcasting centre for Albanian media outlets. Over time it has gradually fallen into a state of graffiti-covered disrepair. The question of what to do with the space became a point of contention and there have been many plans over the years for demolition or rehabilitation.
