About Korčula Old Town

Korčula Old Town is an incredibly beautiful medieval walled city set on an oval-shaped peninsula in Korčula Croatia. This beautiful city is surrounded by the Peljesac Channel. Often likened to its more famous counterpart Dubrovnik, it is a beautiful example of Venetian architecture. This pedestrian town is organised in a fish bone shape with the main street running north to south and streets extending out from that main street on either side. This street configuration allows good ventilation of the town. Streets to the west of the main street are straight, which allows the summer maestral to enter and cool the city. Conversely on the east the streets are slightly curved to protect from the northeasterly winds during winter.

The buildings in Korcula Old Town are densely packed within the protective walls. The city is set on a gentle slope, and as such all but one of the streets in Korcula have stairs to navigate the natural slope of the peninsula. In a central position rising out of the city is the stunning St Mark’s Cathedral. Korcula is a stunning and immaculately maintained city which is one of the best-preserved towns in the Adriatic. Korcula is currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
