Remparts d’Avignon, or the Walls of Avignon in English, are 14th century stone walls that surround the city of Avignon France. Built as a means of defence during the Avignon Papacy, these city walls have subsequently been repaired and rebuilt throughout their long history. The original construction of these walls took 20 years to complete. Prior to these walls, there was a set of double walls during the 13th century that protected a smaller area. The current walls span over a distance of 4.3 km (2.7 miles) and enclose an area of 150 hectares (370 acres). While the original design had 12 gates, there are currently 15 vehicular entrances as well as 11 pedestrian entrances. The Remparts d’Avignon are UNESCO World Heritage listed.
