About Lake Pamvotis

Lake Pamvotis, also known as the Lake of Ioannina, is a lake that borders the city of Ioannina. It is the largest lake in the region of Epirus. The lake is 7.9km (4.9 miles) long and 5.4km (3.4 miles) wide. There is also an inhabited island in the middle of the lake. Lake Pamvotis is home to wildlife such as waterbirds, fish and crustaceans. Notably, the Tisma fish is endemic to this lake. Unfortunately the Lake Pamvotis has high levels of pollution. It is however popular for water sports such as water skiing, rowing and canoeing.

About Ioannina Castle

Ioannina Castle, also known as the Castle of Ioannina, is an historic fortified town in Greece. Notably, it is the oldest continuously inhabited Byzantine castle in the country. The castle sits of a rocky promontory overlooking Lake Pamvotis. Within the castle are two citadels – the northeast citadel (the acropolis of Aslan Pasha) as well as the southeast citadel (Its Kale). Ioannina Castle dates back to around the 6th century CE. It was significantly reconstructed under the reign of Ali Pasha in the 18th century and incorporates both Ottoman as well as Byzantine architectural elements.

National park near Ioannina Greece: Vikos-Aoos National Park

About Vikos-Aoos National Park

Vikos-Aoos National Park is one of the 10 national parks on mainland Greece. It gained national park designation in 1973. Located north of the city of Ioannina, it spans an area of 12,600 hectares (31,135 acres). This national park takes its name from the two major gorges in the area, Vikos Gorge as well as Aoos Gorge. Vikos Gorge holds the Guinness Books of Records title of the deepest canyon in the world in proportion to its width.

Vikos-Aoos National Park is a UNESCO Geopark and is also part of the Natura 2000 ecological network. It is located in the north west part of the Pindus Mountain Range and also includes 30 named mountains including Mt Typmphe, which has a height of 2,497 metres (8,192 ft) at Gamila peak. Additionally, its landscape includes coniferous and deciduous forest, rivers, lakes and caves as well as a few rural villages. The area is home to a wide array of wildlife including the brown bear, wolves, foxes, otters, lynx as well as 121 species of birds.

Last surviving synagogue Ioannina Greece: Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue

About Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue Ioannina Greece

Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue, also known as the Old Synagogue, is the only remaining synagogue in Ioannina. This synagogue is located within the walled Castro, near the Big Gate. There was once a smaller synagogue next door, but the Germans destroyed it during WW2 and now only its shell remains. However the mayor of Ioannina at the time, Demetrios Vlachides, was instrumental in protecting the Old Synagogue.

The Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue is believed to date back to the Byzantine era and is located within the castle’s walls along Justinian Street in Ioannina, Greece. The synagogue was restored twice, once in 1881 and again in 1987. It is square in shape and is internally divided by eight columns and arches. The eastern side of the synagogue features a Neo-classical Holy Gate while the western side has an elevated platform where the Torah is read. The interior walls are adorned with stone plaques inscribed with the names of Ioannina Jews who were lost due to the Holocaust. In 1944, 1850 members of this community were deported to Auschwitz and only 163 returned. Today, the community consists of only around 50 members

Its Kale Acropolis of Ioannina, also known as Iç Kale in Turkish, is the inner citadel of Ioannina Castle. This enclave is located on a hill in the southeast of the city in its own fortified area. It is now an archaeological site that spans across two levels. Within Its Kale is the Fetiye Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha, the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina as well as the Treasury. Its Kale dates back to 1082 CE but was rebuilt as Ali Pasha’s palace and mosque from 1788.

About Iera Moni Panagias Tsoukas

Iera Moni Panagias Tsoukas is a small stone monastery about 30 minutes drive from Ioannina. It has spectacular views across the Arachthos gorge and also across to the Arachthos Potamos River. The monastery was first built in 1190 and was destroyed in 1736. The current building was subsequently rebuilt in 1779. The monastery is at an altitude of 850 metres and the nearby canyon depth is 470 metres. There are currently two monks that live in the monastery – one Greek and one French.

Why visit Iera Moni Panagias Tsoukas

Iera Moni Panagias Tsoukas is a peaceful monastery dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary. It offers amazing views from its balcony. Be sure to look out for the nice sculptures along the street on the way to the monastery near the village of Elliniko.

About Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Philanthropenoi

Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Philanthropenoi, also known as Iera Moni Agiou Nikolaou Filanthropinon or Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου των Φιλανθρωπηνών in Greek, the oldest monastery on Ioannina Island. Located on the western part of the island, it was built in the 13th century and subsequently enlarged in the 16th century. Additionally, during the 16th century frescoes were added in the katholikon. These post-Byzantine frescoes were painted by Frankos Katelanos and cover every available surface.

We recommend wearing modest clothing including covering shoulders when visiting the monastery. Photos are not allowed.

Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas of Philanthropenoi is a historic monastery which is known for its elaborate and well-preserved frescoes. About City hall of Ioannina

City hall of Ioannina is a historic building in the centre of Ioannina. Architect Zoumboulidis designed this 3-storey building. It was built by the National Bank in 1936 in post-Byzantine style. Originally used as a branch of the National Bank, it was the site of the Zosimaia Library in the 1960s and is now the Hall of the Municipal Council. Inside the City Hall there are portraits of former mayors that were painted by local Epirot artists.

Ioannina Island is a small island in the middle of Lake Pamvotis. This is an unnamed island and is known simply as To Nisi or The Island by locals. The ferry ride to get here from Ioannina Greece is 2.50 euro each way (as at 2024), but entry to the island itself is free. This car-free island has charming cobblestone streets and a ring road around its circumference. Home to only around 200 people, at its widest points it measures 500 metres by 800 metres. Ioannina Island has a history dating back to the 13th century. Over the years 7 different monasteries were built on the island, making this island the 3rd largest monastic state in Greece. Additionally, the Albanian leader Ali Pasha was assassinated on Ioannina Island and there is an Ali Pasha Museum on the island.
