Oldest village in Corfu Greece: Old Perithia
About Old Perithia
Old Perithia is a 14th century village nestled on the side of Corfu’s highest mountain, Mount Pantokrator. This Venetian style village was established during the Byzantine era, away from the dangers of pirates and mosquitoes that were found along the coast. Hidden in the hills, the village was built to see but not be seen. It was an agricultural village with around 130 houses surrounded by 8 churches. The buildings were made from local stone.
Over the centuries, Old Perithia grew in prosperity and became the wealthiest village in Corfu. At one point around 1200 people lived in this Corfiot village. However during the 20th century this all changed as tourism came to the island and opportunities centred around the coast. Moreover, Old Perithia’s isolated position meant modern conveniences like electricity remained out of reach. By the 1960s Old Perithia was an abandoned village. Consequently nature started taking over the buildings and the old stone began to crumble in this ghost village of Corfu.
However in 2010 Old Perithia’s fortunes started to change. A couple called Mark and Saskia Henderson saw the potential of the village and started restoring some of the buildings. Over time some locals have returned to the village and Old Perithia has also become a tourist destination. Old Perithia is now a Heritage Protected site.

Today over 35% of the village has been restored in a manner keeping with the original character of the village but with modern conveniences such as electricity and high speed wifi. Old Perithia is the perfect place to relax and unwind while enjoying peaceful surroundings and the sounds of nature. There are also great hiking opportunities surrounding the village.
