About Skanderbeg Square Albania
Skanderbeg Square, also known as Sheshi Skënderbej in Albanian, is the main public square in the heart of Tirana. It is named after Albania’s national hero, who is colloquially referred to as Skanderbeg. A statue of Skanderbeg dominates the square, and a number of other important buildings such as Et’hem Bej Mosque, the Clock Tower of Tirana, the National Museum of History and the Palace of Culture also line the square. It is a sprawling space, covering 40,000 m² and is the largest pedestrian zone in the Balkans. This ex-communist space has been redesigned in recent years and now has a slight pyramid shape and is lined with plants and gardens.

Skanderbeg Square is the epicentre of Tirana, and one of the most important landmarks in Albania. Surrounding the square are some of the best sites in the city, including the Skanderbeg Statue, Et’hem Bej Mosque, the National Library, and the National Historical Museum. The sheer scale of the square is impressive and it is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Albania. In addition to its architectural appeal, Skanderbeg Square is also a hub for cultural events and displays. When we were there we saw the Albanian Army Marching Band perform as well as an operatic performance on the steps of the Opera & Ballet Theatre. While you can walk from one end of the square to the other in 5 minutes, we recommend devoting at least a couple of hours to enjoying the square and the buildings around it as well as participating in any events that might be happening in the square. Given that the square is the main focal point of the city, it is highly likely that you will pass through the square several times during your stay in Tirana.

About Grand Park of Tirana
The Grand Park of Tirana, known as Parku i Madh i Tiranës in Albanian is a park on the artificial lake at the southern end of Tirana Albania. It is the lungs of the city, with an abundance of plants and green space. It is a popular place for walkers, runners and cyclists as well as families looking for a fun day out. The park hosts cultural events in its open air amphitheatre and there are also a number of cafes scattered around the park. Grand Park of Tirana is also home to a zoo, a botanical garden, the Presidential Palace, multi-purpose sport courts, hiking trails and memorials to significant Albanian figures, fallen soldiers and victims of the holocaust.

There are a few cafes and restaurants on the grounds of the Grand Park of Tirana as well as close by the park. We personally recommend dining at Sofra e Aruit. The restaurant has a beautiful shaded courtyard area which overlooks the Grand Park of Tirana. They serve hearty Albanian food and their staff even wear traditional Albanian outfits. We had their lamb ribs with a few traditional Albanian sides. It was a really enjoyable meal in a beautiful setting.
Another great activity in the Grand Park of Tirana is taking a ride on the tourist train. This is a fun way to see the park and enjoy the scenery.

Orthodox church in Tirana Albania: Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral
About Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral
The Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, also known as Katedralja Ngjallja e Krishtit or the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania, is third-largest Eastern Orthodox church in the Balkans. Located in the centre of Tirana, a short walk from Skanderbeg Square, this Albanian Orthodox Church was opened on 24 June 2012. It is a domed church and includes a 46 metre high bell tower. Inside the church is a colourful painted ceiling. The church complex also includes a cathedral, the chapel of the Nativity, residence of the Holy Synod, a cultural centre, a library, two smaller chapels and a museum. Its amphitheatre has capacity for 500-850 people. The church was officially consecrated in 2014.

Pazari i Ri, also known as New Bazaar or New Market in English, is the main market in Tirana. It was established in 1939 in one of the oldest areas of the city. Iconic statue in Tirana Albania: Skanderbeg Statue
About Skanderbeg Statue Tirana Albania
Skanderbeg, whose real name was Gjergj Kastrioti, was an Albanian nobleman and military commander who led a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. He is considered a national hero in Albania and is known for his bravery and leadership skills. Skanderbeg was born in 1405 and spent most of his life fighting against the Ottomans, who had conquered Albania in the 15th century. Skanderbeg’s rebellion lasted for more than two decades and inspired other Albanians to fight for their independence. Today, Skanderbeg is remembered as a symbol of Albanian resistance against foreign invaders.
The Skanderbeg Statue is located in a prominent position in Skanderbeg Square. This bronze statue depicts Skanderbeg holding a sword while riding a horse. The statue sits on top of a stone pedestal. The statue was erected in 1968.

Historic mosque in Tirana Albania: Et’hem Bej Mosque
About Et’hem Bej Mosque
Et’hem Bej Mosque, also known as the Hajji Et’hem Bey Mosque or Xhamia e Haxhi Et’hem Beut in Albanian, is located in the centre of Tirana, off Skanderbeg Square. This Ottoman style mosque is affiliated with the Sunni branch of Islam. Construction of the mosque started in either 1791 or 1794 and was completed in either 1819 or 1821. Molla Bey started the construction of the mosque and it was finished by his son Et’hem Bey. The mosque was designated a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1948 but was closed during Albania’s communist era. A major turning point in the country occurred on 18 January 1991, when 10,000 people entered the mosque carrying flags. This event was the start of the fall of communism in Albania. Today, Et’hem Bej Mosque is a place of worship and visitors can visit the mosque for free.

Historic building in Tirana Albania: Pyramid of Tirana
About Pyramid of Tirana
Pyramid of Tirana, also known as Enver Hoxha Pyramid, Piramida or Pjeter Arbnori International Center of Culture, is a distinctive structure in the middle of Tirana. It was originally opened on 14 October 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, a museum dedicated to the memory of Albania’s Communist leader Enver Hoxha. Hoxha’s daughter Pranvera Hoxha was one of the co-designers of the structure, which is an example of brutalist architecture.
Since the fall of communism in 1991, the pyramid has taken on a variety of uses including as a conference and events centre, a temporary NATO base, a nightclub and a broadcasting centre for Albanian media outlets. Over time it has gradually fallen into a state of graffiti-covered disrepair. The question of what to do with the space became a point of contention and there have been many plans over the years for demolition or rehabilitation. In 2018 the decision was made to renovate the building and transform it into IT center for youth called TUMO Tirana. It is scheduled to open to the public in late 2023.

Historic landmark in Tirana Albania: Clock Tower of Tirana
About Clock Tower of Tirana
The Clock Tower of Tirana, or Kulla e Sahatit të Tiranës in Albanian, is a 35 metre high clock tower located next to Et’hem Bej Mosque in the centre of Tirana. It was built between 1822 and 1830 in the Ottoman architectural style. The original bell was from Venice, but it was damaged during World War I. The new clock mechanism was purchased from Germany and the tower was extended 5 metres with a new Venetian-type roof to accommodate the larger mechanism. This clock tower was designated as a Cultural Monument of Albania in 1973.
Why visit Clock Tower of Tirana
The Clock Tower of Tirana is one of the major landmarks in Tirana’s skyline and until 1970 was the tallest building in the city. It has a unique blend of architectural styles, with its lower stone section being in the Ottoman style and its newer balcony and above being in the western style. If you pay the 200 Lek entry fee (as at 2023) you can climb the tower to get stunning views of the city.

About Reja – The Cloud Tirana Albania
Reja – The Cloud is a modern art installation designed by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto. It was created in 2013 and was shown in London before coming to Tirana. The structure is made from white steel rods and plastic and is supposed to resemble a cloud. It is an interactive art piece that you can sit on, climb on or take selfies with. It is also sometimes used as an open air cinema as well as an event space.

About Rinia Park Tirana Albania
Rinia Park, also known as Taiwan Park, Youth Park or Parku Rinia in Albanian, is a central public park in the middle of Tirana. It was built in 1950 during Albania’s communist era. It started off as a family-friendly park. After the end of communism in 1991, illegal buildings sprang up and the park became known as a hang-out for Tirana’s underworld. In the 2000s, the park was rehabilitated and the illegal buildings were demolished. Today the park is once again a pleasant green space for the community. The park has nicely maintained lawns and a building called the Taiwan Centre that houses shops, restaurants, cafes, the Regency Casino, fountains and a bowling and billiards centre.
